My $10,000 Suit — Amy Johnson

My $10,000 Suit (2018) is inspired by the Nudie suits worn by anyone who was anyone in country music or Hollywood from the 1940s on. It is a vintage suit, embellished by hand with appliqué and embroidery based on my own designs. It also has thousands of rhinestones in a variety of colors. The suit is made up of images and symbols that tell the story of my dream to be a horse trainer (cowboy) as a young woman, the failure of that dream, and the windy road to understanding that failure I found through studying art. I could not have made this piece without the help of several friends: Cass Gannaway, James Gannaway, Alicia Halverson, Rachel Hobbs, Elspeth Iralu, and Diane Johnson.
